Hiroshi Saito is a textile artist, a master of free-hand yuzen textile dyeing, who lives and works in Kyoto. Saito-san has been working with textiles for over forty years, specializing early on in his career with traditional Japanese yuzen techniques, then elevating his work to an artistic color and abstract painting approach. His artful is as much about engaging people through his craft, organizing “Nozome” painting experiences that can accommodate up to 100 people. 10 years ago, his community activism and artform took him to the communities in the Iwate prefecture which were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. He used his artform in open, outdoor spaces to draw the community out of their homes where they were sequestered, following the earthquake, and where they could re-engage with humanity.
His artful shirts and kimono-style contemporary jackets are one-of-a-kind and one size.
One last note: Saito-san is committed to using the raw fabrics of Japan (wool muslin, cotton gauze, wool gauze, cotton-link, silk organza), with hopes of revitalizing their industry and production domestically.
