Kanako Matsuo grew up in and around Tokyo, studying textiles, which led to the study of fashion design at Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in Belgium. After returning to Japan, she worked for Issey Miyake for 6 years, in the capacity of a collection line planner in Tokyo. In 2019, Kanako-san began her journey as a freelance designer.
In creating Kalnam brand of jewelry, Kanak0-san is using aluminum for its flexibility, light weight and its ability to be dyed different colors, using electrolytic coloring. “inorganic aluminum is transformed into living treasure through imagination, skill and warm of the human hand.” Kalnam Jewelry is created from “scrap” materials generated in manufacturing of industrial goods. Their varying shapes becomes a treasure trove of inspiration and prospective jewelry that is light as air.
