Sarita is the designer/director, and Sarika is the business director of Karomi Craft in Kolkata, India. Together, they brought modern jamdani (patterned weaving unique to eastern India/Bengal) to the Folk Art Market in 2023. We have worked with them since early 2024. “Deep in the heart of rural Bengal, we convinced a single weaver in a weaving village to challenge the conservative Jamdani motifs and trust our experimental innovative designs.” Karomi Craft was started in 2007, and has won UNESCO awards for excellence since then. What makes Karomi “unconventional is its artistic approach to design. Modern in spirit, rooted in tradition, a multifaceted studio bridges the gap from village to market. Thus, making the leap from sustaining the craft and villages, to dressing the chic, sophisticated, environmentally conscious consumer.”
