Mittan is a relatively new Japan-based brand, founded and directed by Takeshi Mitani from Kyoto. Mitani’s commitment is to modern ethnic clothing based on the traditional folk costume, and dependent upon both natural materials (silk, cotton, hemp, wool) and natural dyes derived from plants, insects, minerals and charcoal. He starts with 2-dimensional shapes, and infuses his garment silhouettes with a sense of their inherent functionality. “We aim to create clothes that will last for a long time, unfettered by the ephemeral trends of the times.”
